A report published by Kaspersky states that around 500 users have encountered problems in the last couple of days while using FaceApp.
“Kaspersky has identified a fake application that is designed to trick users into thinking it is a certified version of FaceApp but goes on to infect devices with an adware module called MobiDash,” Igor Golovin , a security researcher at Kaspersky warned.
When the users downloaded the fake application from unofficial sources and installed it into their handsets, it stimulated a failure and subsequently activated malicious activities.
MobiDash is an adware which, if installed on a system, starts displaying ads which annoy most of the users. The adware takes advantage of the way that Android works to make its deleting process difficult.
There are around 800 different modules of the adware identified by the researchers.
As the FaceApp has taken the social media by storm, the attackers have found another way to launch their malicious activities. This opens the door for malicious code such as MobiDash to slide under the radar without being detected.
