A CBI court in Hyderabad has recently sentenced 13 people for insurance fraud. Suresh Damodar, former senior divisional manager of Oriental Insurance Company’s Secunderabad branch, and 12 others have been convicted in a criminal conspiracy and cheating case.
CBI had registered a case against Damodar and others on April 28, 2007 for committing irregularities in settlement of claims pertaining to motor damage, fire, marine and engineering and caused Rs 61.2 lakh loss to the company.
On March 31, 2009, CBI had filed chargesheet against Damodar and 17 others under Sections120-B, 419, 420, 468, 471 and 511 of the IPC and 13(2) r/w 13(1) (d) of PC Act, 1988. Three of the accused persons, inclusive of Damodar, were sentenced to three years of jail and fined Rs 75,000. Other convicts were sentenced to two years jail and told to pay fine of amount ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000.
