Singapore Firms Seek Stronger Risk Management Role

Singapore businesses increasingly recognise the importance of risk management, but many organisations continue to involve risk teams too late in critical decision-making processes, according to a study by Coface.

The survey found that companies expect risk management functions to contribute more strategically, moving beyond traditional monitoring roles. However, risk teams are often brought into discussions only after major business decisions have already been made, limiting their ability to influence outcomes.

The findings highlight a gap between the growing expectations from risk professionals and their actual involvement within organisations. Businesses increasingly face complex challenges, including geopolitical uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, cyber threats, economic volatility and changing regulatory requirements.

The study suggests that companies want risk management teams to play a more proactive role in areas such as strategic planning, business expansion, supplier evaluation and decision-making processes.

However, many risk functions remain focused mainly on identifying problems after they emerge rather than helping organisations anticipate and prepare for potential disruptions.

Coface noted that organisations that integrate risk management earlier into business planning can make better-informed decisions and improve resilience. Early involvement allows companies to assess potential financial, operational and reputational consequences before committing resources.

The findings also underline the need for stronger collaboration between risk teams and business units. Effective risk management requires access to relevant data, clear communication channels and support from senior leadership.

As businesses operate in an environment of increasing uncertainty, risk management is becoming an important component of long-term strategy rather than only a compliance requirement.

Companies that successfully embed risk thinking into everyday decisions may be better positioned to manage disruptions, protect profitability and identify new opportunities.
