EY India Launches Investigation Playbook

EY India and JSA have launched a new playbook on investigation readiness, addressing how organisations can prepare for a changing risk environment marked by increasing regulatory scrutiny, digital risks and complex corporate investigations.

The playbook focuses on strengthening organisational preparedness so that companies can respond more effectively when allegations of misconduct, fraud or regulatory violations arise.

Investigation readiness is becoming increasingly important as businesses operate across complex digital and regulatory environments. Organisations may need to respond to incidents involving fraud, bribery, conflicts of interest, data issues, cyber incidents and other forms of misconduct.

A structured investigation framework can help organisations preserve relevant evidence, establish clear responsibilities and respond to allegations in a consistent manner.

Digital evidence has become particularly important. Emails, messaging platforms, transaction records, access logs and other electronic information can be critical during investigations. Organisations therefore need appropriate systems and processes for identifying, preserving and reviewing such information.

The changing regulatory environment also increases the importance of documentation and governance. Companies need clear policies covering reporting mechanisms, escalation procedures, investigation protocols and decision-making authority.

From a risk-management perspective, investigation readiness should form part of a broader governance, risk and compliance framework rather than being treated only as a response mechanism after an incident.

Internal audit, compliance, legal, risk management, cybersecurity and senior management functions may all have important roles during an investigation. Clear coordination between these functions can reduce delays and improve the quality of investigations.

Technology can further support investigation processes through data analytics, forensic tools and automated review of large volumes of information. However, technology must be supported by appropriate controls and professional judgement.

For financial institutions, investigation readiness is particularly important because fraud, misconduct and regulatory breaches can create financial, operational, legal and reputational consequences.

The playbook highlights a broader shift in corporate risk management: organisations increasingly need to prepare not only to prevent risks but also to investigate and respond effectively when incidents occur.

Building investigation readiness can therefore strengthen organisational resilience, improve response capabilities and support more effective governance in an increasingly complex risk environment.
