Make disaster risk management professional: PM’s principal secretary P K Mishra

Prime Minister’s principal secretary P K Mishra said on Saturday that programmes like the national platform for disaster risk reduction (NPDRR) are turning into a Jan Andolan (a people’s movement), at the same time emphasising that disaster risk management needs to be professionalised at the state and district level with better work culture.

Mishra was addressing the valedictory session of the third meeting of NPDRR organised here. He said it is important to develop programmes and interventions which are responsive to the needs of the people.

“Disaster management functions at all levels – national, state, and district – need to be supported by professionally trained staff, a fit-for-purpose structure, administrative infrastructure, modern workspace, and necessary facilities such as emergency operations centres,” the PM’s principal secretary said.

Mishra said states now have adequate resources and they will be further supported by National Disaster Management Authority, National Institute of Disaster Management and NDRF in a coordinated manner.

Prioritising the needs of the most vulnerable and mainstreaming disaster management in developments, the PM’s principal secretary said building local resilience is most important.
