Six impactful ways South Africa is reducing disaster risk

South Africa is making significant strides in disaster risk reduction through a blend of innovation, community engagement, and policy action. The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) highlighted six standout initiatives reshaping resilience in the country.

First, a climate-smart agricultural programme in KwaZulu-Natal is training farmers to adapt to erratic rainfall. Second, Cape Town’s “Ready Set Go” campaign has educated over 20,000 citizens on fire preparedness. Third, risk mapping using drone technology is helping municipalities plan more effectively for hazards.

Fourth, the government has institutionalised disaster risk reduction through the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), which coordinates responses nationwide. Fifth, a mobile-based early warning system now alerts millions of people instantly. Lastly, the integration of disaster risk education into school curricula is preparing younger generations to be safety-conscious citizens.

These diverse approaches demonstrate South Africa’s commitment to building resilient communities in the face of increasing climate and disaster threats.
