IIT Gandhinagar Launches AI Resilience Command Centre for Climate Risk

The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar has launched an Artificial Intelligence–enabled Resilience Command Centre aimed at strengthening climate risk management research and disaster preparedness capabilities.

The centre will leverage artificial intelligence, data analytics and geospatial technologies to assess vulnerabilities arising from extreme weather events and long-term climate variability. It is expected to support evidence-based policymaking by generating predictive models and scenario analyses to evaluate potential environmental and socio-economic impacts.

Officials said the initiative seeks to integrate academic research with practical applications by collaborating with government departments, disaster management authorities and policy institutions. The command centre will focus on improving early warning systems, mapping climate-sensitive regions and designing adaptation strategies for infrastructure, agriculture and urban ecosystems.

India has witnessed a rise in climate-related events, including floods, heatwaves and cyclones, increasing the need for advanced analytical tools to mitigate risks. By combining large datasets with AI-driven modelling, the centre aims to enhance response planning and resilience-building efforts.

The facility will promote interdisciplinary research, bringing together experts from engineering, environmental science, policy and technology domains. In addition to disaster response, it will examine long-term sustainability strategies and risk-informed planning.

The launch reflects a broader shift towards technology-driven climate governance. As environmental risks intensify, institutions are increasingly adopting digital solutions to strengthen preparedness and reduce exposure to climate-related shocks.

The initiative positions IIT Gandhinagar as a key contributor to climate resilience research and highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in environmental risk management.
