Mashreq has launched new generative AI capabilities within its fraud management platform in collaboration with Clari5, a Perfios company, to strengthen fraud detection and financial-crime investigations.
The new capabilities focus on three areas: improving fraud detection effectiveness, increasing analyst productivity and supporting better investigative decision-making. The objective is to help fraud professionals process complex information more quickly and respond to emerging threats with greater consistency.
The system is designed to augment human investigators rather than replace their judgement. It brings together information from different sources to accelerate investigations and support more informed decisions, while keeping human oversight within the fraud-management process.
A significant feature is the deployment of the AI on-premises within the bank’s own environment. According to Clari5, the approach is designed to keep the system auditable, explainable and under human control, addressing important governance requirements for AI use in financial crime management.
The development is particularly relevant as fraud becomes increasingly sophisticated across digital banking channels. Generative AI can potentially help investigators interpret large volumes of information, identify relevant patterns and respond to emerging risks faster.
Clari5 says its platform is used by more than 80 banks across 30+ countries, processes over 12 billion transactions every month and protects more than 1 billion accounts.
For banks, the initiative highlights an emerging approach to AI adoption in fraud risk management: using generative AI as an intelligence and investigation layer, while retaining established controls, human judgement and accountability.
The development also demonstrates that responsible AI in banking requires more than model performance. Explainability, auditability, data control, governance and human oversight are becoming important components of AI-enabled financial-crime management.
