AI Transforms Vessel Traffic Management

Artificial intelligence is reshaping vessel traffic management by improving maritime safety, port efficiency, traffic coordination and collision-risk prediction, according to a new global market report from Research and Markets.

The global vessel traffic management market is projected to grow from $7.94 billion in 2026 to $12.94 billion by 2032, registering a compound annual growth rate of approximately 8.44%. Rising port congestion, stricter safety requirements, environmental pressures and growing cybersecurity concerns are driving investment in advanced maritime monitoring systems.

Modern vessel traffic systems combine data from automatic identification systems, radar, satellite communications, cameras, weather feeds and electronic navigation charts. These technologies provide port authorities, coast guards and shipping operators with real-time visibility across ports, waterways and offshore areas.

AI is increasingly being used to analyse vessel movements, weather conditions, radar information and port schedules. This allows operators to identify unsafe speeds, route deviations, suspicious vessel activity, possible congestion and collision risks before they develop into serious incidents.

Machine-learning systems can also improve estimated arrival times and berth planning by considering channel traffic, weather, pilot availability, terminal readiness and towing requirements. Computer vision further strengthens the detection of smaller vessels and objects that may not transmit identification signals.

The report highlights that AI-powered alert prioritisation can reduce information overload among vessel traffic operators. However, the adoption of these systems also creates new requirements related to data quality, model transparency, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance and human oversight.

Asia-Pacific is expected to remain a major market because of its busy shipping corridors, large ports and exposure to typhoons, monsoons and congested waterways. India is also expanding vessel traffic systems to support port development, offshore energy activities, coastal security and maritime trade.

Future growth opportunities are expected across smart ports, autonomous vessels, coastal surveillance, emissions monitoring, offshore energy and maritime cybersecurity. The most effective systems are likely to retain human control while using AI to strengthen prediction, planning and emergency response.
