Cyber Insurer Adds AI-Based Risk Assessment Service

Cowbell, a cyber and specialty insurer, has launched an AI-based risk advisory tool called Risk Advisor for its policyholders. The tool is available through the Cowbell Platform and Cowbell OMNI mobile app and brings together information including risk assessments, security findings and threat intelligence to help organisations better understand and manage their cyber exposures. The service is particularly aimed at turning cyber-risk information into practical actions for policyholders rather than limiting the insurer’s role to providing financial protection after a cyber incident.

Risk Advisor also assesses risks associated with organisations’ use of artificial intelligence, including AI-related exposures, vulnerabilities and governance issues. This is significant as businesses increasingly introduce AI systems that can create additional attack surfaces and new data-security and governance challenges. The tool is designed to combine different sources of risk information and help policyholders prioritise areas requiring attention. Cowbell’s approach reflects a broader shift in cyber insurance towards risk prevention and continuous risk improvement, where insurers can use technology and threat intelligence to help customers reduce their exposure before a claim occurs.

The development also highlights the changing role of cyber insurers as cyber risk becomes more dynamic. Instead of treating underwriting and claims as the primary points of interaction, insurers can increasingly provide ongoing risk assessment, vulnerability identification and risk-mitigation support throughout the policy period. For businesses, this can strengthen cyber resilience, while for insurers it may provide better visibility into changing exposures and support more informed underwriting and risk-management decisions.
