Leveraging AI and LLMs to transform ICU risk assessment

Hospitals grapple with fragmented patient data, especially in intensive care units (ICUs), where rapid deterioration and high complexity demand real-time situational awareness. In an article on MedCity News, Shane Cooke highlights how artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) are being deployed to bridge critical gaps in inpatient data and enhance patient risk assessment.

Cooke notes that one of the biggest obstacles is the accumulation of “monitoring systems, peripheral devices, EHR data and other data sources” that rarely converge into a single actionable feed. In his words:

“This often means continuously finding better, more efficient ways to solve problems, utilising the most optimal tools and data we have at our disposal.”

He adds:

“And as of right now, and for the foreseeable future, that means finding appropriate use cases to leverage the power of AI and LLMs where it most makes sense.” 

These technologies promise to amalgamate diverse data—vital signs, device outputs, unstructured notes—and convert that into risk insights. The real-time analysis aims to detect signs of decline like sepsis, respiratory failure or cardiogenic shock earlier, and to alert care teams proactively. For example, when a platform signals that a patient is trending away from deterioration, staff can safely de-escalate monitoring or medication, freeing ICU beds and reducing costs.

Though physicians once viewed such tools with suspicion, recent surveys show growing acceptance: 68% of doctors in 2024 believe AI offers advantages (up from 63% in 2023). The article emphasises that AI is not meant to replace clinicians, but to act as “a virtual assistant … always working, always helpful and never gets tired”.

As adoption expands, hospitals must integrate AI platforms with existing EHRs, ensure data governance and train staff to interpret AI-driven insights. The result: enhanced patient safety, better resource use and a departure from fragmented care toward continuous, data-driven ICU monitoring.
