S&P Global Ratings has launched Vault Risk Assessment, a new analytical framework designed to evaluate risks associated with digital asset markets. The initiative is intended to provide market participants with a structured way to assess risks surrounding digital assets and the infrastructure supporting them, as the sector becomes increasingly connected with traditional financial markets.
The framework focuses on providing greater visibility into the risk characteristics of digital asset market structures and counterparties. As digital assets expand across trading, lending, custody and other financial activities, participants face risks that can include counterparty exposure, operational weaknesses, liquidity constraints and market volatility. A structured risk-assessment approach can help institutions evaluate these factors more consistently when considering exposure to digital-asset markets.
The launch also reflects the growing need for independent risk analysis and transparency as digital assets become more integrated with the wider financial system. For banks, insurers, asset managers and other financial institutions, assessing digital-asset exposure requires consideration of traditional financial risks alongside technology, cybersecurity, operational and regulatory risks. Tools such as Vault Risk Assessment could therefore support more systematic digital-asset risk management and due diligence as institutional participation in the sector develops.
