Deutsche Bank Uses AI to Cut Corporate Loan Decisions to Minutes

Deutsche Bank is using artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate corporate lending decisions, reducing the time required for some smaller-business loan decisions from weeks to minutes, according to the bank’s technology leadership. The AI system went live during the summer and is also helping reduce lending decisions for multinational companies from months to weeks.

The development demonstrates how banks are increasingly using AI to automate parts of credit assessment and improve operational efficiency. Faster processing can potentially reduce manual workloads while allowing relationship managers and credit teams to focus on more complex lending decisions.

However, the increased use of AI in lending also creates significant model, operational and cybersecurity risks. Deutsche Bank’s technology chief identified cyber risk as a major priority as the bank expands its use of AI across operations.

The bank is investing heavily in its technology infrastructure, with plans to spend more than €2.5 billion between 2026 and 2028. It has also developed an internal AI platform called ADA, which is designed to support the development, monitoring and control of AI agents.

The platform enables Deutsche Bank to oversee AI-agent activity, manage associated risks and switch between different AI models as technology evolves. This reflects the growing importance of AI governance as banks move towards more autonomous systems.

For financial institutions, the Deutsche Bank example highlights the need to balance speed and efficiency with credit-risk controls, model validation, cybersecurity, human oversight and accountability.
