Volcano destinations can face hazards including eruptions, volcanic ash, gas emissions, landslides and other related events, making risk assessment important before tourism activities and infrastructure are developed.
The ministry’s position highlights a broader principle of risk-informed tourism development, where economic and tourism opportunities are considered alongside disaster preparedness and resilience. For insurers and risk professionals, volcanic tourism also demonstrates the importance of hazard mapping, exposure assessment, emergency planning and business-continuity measures when supporting activities in naturally hazardous environments.
