Senior Living Operators Urged to Adopt Risk Management Approach

Senior living operators are being encouraged to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) risks into their broader risk management programmes as the technology becomes increasingly integrated into senior care and business operations. The approach is intended to help organisations capture both the benefits of AI and the potential operational, legal, privacy and liability exposures associated with its use.
AI applications can support areas such as administrative processes, resident services and decision-making, but errors, inaccurate outputs, data privacy concerns and inadequate oversight can create significant risks. For senior living organisations, these concerns are particularly important because operations involve vulnerable residents and sensitive personal and health information.

A risk management approach begins with identifying where AI is being used and assessing the potential consequences of failures or misuse. Organisations should establish clear governance policies, define responsibilities and ensure appropriate human oversight of AI-supported decisions.
Employee awareness is also important because staff may independently use AI tools without fully understanding how information submitted to those systems may be handled. Operators should therefore establish guidelines covering acceptable AI use, data protection and accountability.

The approach also calls for organisations to review contracts with technology providers and consider whether existing insurance policies adequately address emerging AI-related exposures. As AI adoption expands, integrating AI into enterprise risk management can help senior living operators prepare for evolving risks while maintaining appropriate controls and accountability.
